About the event: The Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy (IRRPP) at UIC invite you to a presentation and panel discussion of a new IRRPP report Chicago's Racial Wealth Gap: Legacies of the Past, Challenges in the Present, Uncertain Futures documenting how local patterns in racial wealth gaps shape the lives of Chicagoans.

Analysis of the experiences and life trajectories of the 99 middle class Black, Latinx, and White families who generously shared their stories with us demonstrate that there is much work to be done to support families who are contending today not just with the legacies of past inequities but with the ongoing failures of public policy to address basic needs. The presentation will be followed by a panelist discussion.

Panelists Include:

  • Amanda E. Lewis (UIC)
  • Allison Flanagan (Center for Tax and Budget Accountability)
  • Damon Jones (University of Chicago)
  • Joanna Trotter (The Chicago Community Trust)
  • Louise Seamster (University of Iowa)
  • Lorena Garcia (UIC).

Tomorrow, Saturday, February 27, 2021, at 2pm, Ralph Martire, CTBA's Executive Director and Roosevelt University Professor of Public Policy, will join Dick Kay on his "Back on the Beat" show on WCPT 820 AM.

In Illinois, the average annual percentage rate (APR) on a payday loan is 297 percent, and the average APR on an auto title loan is 179 percent. Federal law already protects active-duty military with a 36 percent APR cap.

Rainbow PUSH is thrilled to launched in November 2020 a new virtual town hall series, called Shaping America’s Education Agenda. This series was designed to serve as a springboard to help shape the future of our country’s education policy. The second discussion in this series will focus on Dr. King’s Dreams for Equity in Education, in honor of Dr. King’s birthday this month. We invite you to join us and our distinguished group of panelists for thought-provoking discussions focused on the extent to which Dr. King’s dream has been realized as it relates to equity in education. What policies do we need to implement to see his dream through?

Illinois voters have the opportunity in the 2020 General Election to decide whether to change the State Constitution so that the state income tax can be taxed at a graduated rate, or not to change it and to  continue to tax income at a flat rate. The vote will be on the ballot as "Proposed Amendment to Section 3 of Article IX of the Illinois Constitution."

Concerned Citizens, Jane Lehmann, Marrleis Trover, along with Barb Baily, Patti Jones, and Candice McLaughlin from Macomb, IL,  are co-hosting a Fair Tax Zoom Event on the proposed amendment.  Ralph Martire, Executive Director of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability (CTBA) will be the speaker and will talk about the rationale for the Amendment and the implications of passing the Amendment as well as if it is rejected.  He will speak for approximately 40 minutes and there will be a Q&A session for the remaining 20 minutes. Questions will be gathered via the "Chat" area in the Zoom.

The event is free, but registration is required.  Space is limited and admission will be on a first come, first served basis, so if you are interested in attending, please register early.  As soon as you register, you will receive the link to the Zoom meeting. REGISTER HERE
